Two apps. One day they never connect.

Your nutrition app has no idea what happened in the gym, and your workout app has no idea whether you ate enough to recover. Surplus is one place that knows both.

One connected day.

Eat

Calories, protein, the scanner, and the foods you actually eat.

Lift

Your routine, your sets, rest, and PRs.

Live

The useful numbers stay on your Lock Screen.

BuildCross into surplus, then see how far in you are.
TrackNo goal. No pressure. Just the numbers.
CutYour own target, with the safety floor in view.

Maintain is on the roadmap, not in the beta.

Duo

Lift together. Keep your own workout.

Invite a friend to the same gym day. You each log your own sets while Surplus keeps you connected — without the group chat.

Food that finds itself

Curated, not crowded.

Search a restaurant, get its real menu — 11,600+ foods built from the chains' own published numbers. Common changes are one-tap modifiers: Protein Style takes a Double-Double from 670 to 480, on the same food.

In-N-Out Double-Double detail marked In-N-Out official. The Protein Style modifier is checked and the log button reads Log 480 calories instead of 670

Everything you use every day is free.

  • Food and workout logging
  • Scanner and quick foods
  • Live Activities and Dynamic Island
  • Build, Track, and Cut

A Pro tier is planned for public launch — nothing is for sale while the beta is closed.

Your history stays on your phone.

No account, no analytics in the app — what you log lives on your device. A new barcode sends only the barcode to Open Food Facts. Training with a partner uses a two-hour room that deletes itself.

The closed beta is underway

Be there the day it opens up.

Built by Steven Gray to spend less time inside a fitness app — and more time using what it knows.

You're in. We'll let you know the day Surplus opens up.

Fair questions
Is the food catalog big enough?

Surplus ships 11,600+ foods on-device: 50 restaurant chains' menus from their own published nutrition data, plus USDA-sourced staples. It's curated so a search returns one right answer instead of forty conflicting user submissions. For everything packaged, the barcode scanner and the on-device Nutrition Facts reader cover the rest.

Do I have to rebuild my program to switch?

No. Paste the routine you already run — from a coach, Notes, or a ChatGPT answer — and Surplus shows you what it understood on a review screen before anything is saved. Every guess is labeled, and a line it couldn't read can't enter your plan until you fix or remove it.

Do I need an account?

No. There are no Surplus accounts. Your history and preferences live on your phone. When a new barcode needs a lookup, Surplus sends only the barcode to Open Food Facts — never your history.

Is Surplus free?

The closed beta is free through TestFlight, and the daily product — logging, search, scanner, Live Activities, workouts — stays free at public launch. A Pro tier is planned at $11.99/month or $79.99/year (student $39.99/year; founding first year $59.99), but nothing is for sale today. The scanner, Live Activities, and allergen information will not be put behind the paywall.

Is Surplus on Android?

Not yet. The beta is iPhone only.
